Trump job approval stable at 41 percent

President Donald Trump’s approval rating remains remarkably stable. In SurveyMonkey’s tracking survey over the past week, 41 percent approve of the job he has been doing as President and 57 percent disapprove.

Both numbers are unchanged over the past week. Trump’s approval number has varied within the range of 39 to 41 percent for all but 2 of the past 17 weeks.

Similarly, the number that strongly approve (22 percent) is also unchanged over the past week, while Trump’s strongly disapprove rating (45 percent) ticked up a point. These ratings have remained remarkably flat for the last several months. The continuing two-to-one gap between strong approval and strong disapproval helped set the stage for a turnout gap favoring the Democrats in recent elections.

While the approval ratings have also been highly consistent when tabulated by partisanship, Trump’s numbers have rebounded very slightly since mid-October (by 2-3 percentage points) among Republicans and independents who lean to neither party. These differences add up to the slight increase, from 39 to 41 percent, in Trump’s overall job approval rating over the same periods.

Finally, the issues Americans say matter most also remain mostly stable, although mentions of jobs and the economy have ticked up slightly, from 23 to 26 percent, since mid-October. Mentions of health care remain unchanged at 23 percent this past week, and have varied between 23 and 25 percent since August. Mentions of terrorism now stand at 12 percent, near the middle of the range (8 to 14 percent) in our surveys during 2017.
